Image of teacher and pupil at a desk with other pupils in the classroomPlans to gradually change the language category of a north Powys primary school to create a Welsh-medium school have moved a step forward with the publication of a statutory notice, the county council has said.

Earlier this week (Tuesday, June 22), Powys County Council's Cabinet agreed to publish a statutory notice on a proposal to alter the language provision at Ysgol Dyffryn Trannon in Trefeglwys so that eventually it becomes a Welsh-medium education setting, ensuring that all pupils attending the school become fully bilingual in Welsh and English.

It is currently a dual-stream school providing English-medium and Welsh-medium education for pupils aged 4 to 11.

The decision to publish the statutory notice was taken after Cabinet considered the findings of a consultation report after the council carried out a seven-week consultation during February and April 2021.

The proposed change would be introduced on a phased basis, year-by-year, starting with Reception in September 2022. It would not affect those pupils already at the school - pupils currently accessing English-medium provision at the school would be able to continue to access this provision until they leave school.

If implemented, the proposal will help the council deliver one of the aims in its Strategy for Transforming Education 2020-2030, which is to improve access to Welsh-medium provision across all key stages. The strategy was approved in April 2020.

Leader of Powys County Council, Cllr Rosemarie Harris, said: "Moving Ysgol Dyffryn Trannon along the language continuum, it will help us meet the aims and objectives within our Strategy for Transforming Education in Powys. It will also ensure that all pupils attending the school have the opportunity to become fully bilingual, fluent in both Welsh and English, therefore contributing to the Welsh Government's aspiration to achieve a million Welsh speakers by 2050."

"However, it is important that Cabinet hears the views of those who object to the proposal before any final decisions are made and I would urge them to send their views to us so that they can be considered."
