War booksCommunities in Powys are being urged to apply for funding to help preserve World War One memorials for future generations.

The Powys War Memorials Project has funding available to repair, restore or maintain World War One memorials in the county.

The maximum grant available for repair works for one memorial is £5,000 while up to £200 is available for memorial surroundings.

Any type of World War One memorial in the county is eligible for funding including stone obelisks, stained glass windows, benches, plaques, statues or halls.

The project can cover up to 90% of the cost of the work while the remaining cost would need to come from match-funding. The application process for funding is quick and easy but they will only be considered on a first come, first serve basis.

Cllr Martin Weale, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Planning, said: "The Powys War Memorials Project marks our respect for those individuals who left Powys sacrificing their lives.

"Memorials form an integral part of our towns, villages and communities and provide a focal point for remembrance.  The funding gives Powys a chance to remember and ensure that these memorials are protected and kept for future generations."

The Powys War Memorials Project, which is being hosted by Powys County Council, commemorates the centenary of World War One, and has been funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Cadw and the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority.

Other elements of the project include identifying, recording and mapping all the war memorials in Powys and encouraging and enabling local communities to carry out research about the men and women named on the county's war memorials.
