Bin collection days to change next month

30th January 2018

recycling lorryBin collection days in Powys are to change for most households next month, the county council has announced.

Powys County Council has been improving the waste and recycling collection rounds to make them more efficient.  The new routes will help the council reduce the costs of providing these services to residents.

The new and improved rounds will start from Monday, February 26 and the council will be writing to all households to inform them of their new collection day.  A list of upcoming dates for non-recyclable waste collections will also be provided, along with an updated guide to recycling in Powys.

Only the day of collection is changing with the council continuing to collect recycling and food waste on a weekly basis and non-recyclable waste every three weeks.  Households will still need to put their waste and recycling out by at 7.30am on their collection day even if the day doesn't change, as the time of collection is likely to be different to the previous rounds.

Cllr Phyl Davies, Cabinet Member for Waste and Recycling, said: "Given the numerous service changes that have occurred since the existing rounds were rolled out, they are not as efficient as they could be and it is important that we look where we can to make improvements.

"By using route optimisation software and the experience of our operational teams, we are ensuring that the waste and recycling collection rounds are as efficient as they can be.  This does mean that many households will see a change in their collection day.

"A great deal of work has gone into optimising the collection arrangements to nearly 70,000 properties, which will save the council over £250,000. The new rounds will be rolled out from Monday, February 26 with all households being informed by post of their new collection day in the next couple of weeks."
