Ysgol Gymraeg y Trallwng

Ysgol Gymraeg y Trallwng imageWelsh Government have approved the Strategic Outline Case for the proposed Welshpool Town Primary Schools Project.  Part of which is the Ysgol Gymraeg y Trallwng, the project forms part of Powys County Council's 21st Century Schools Programme, which aims to improve the learning environment for pupils across the County.  The Programme is jointly funded by the Council and the Welsh Government.

The proposal for Welshpool Town is to build:

  • a new 150 place Welsh-medium Community Primary school on the current Ysgol Maesydre site.

The new school will replace the current Ysgol Maesydre. The aim is for the new schools to be built and opened by September 2018.

Cadw have written to the authority confirming that their application to list the Howell Drive (former Ysgol Maesydre) school building will be upheld and the building is now formally Grade II listed.

However, following a successful challenge from the authority, Cadw have confirmed the 1955 alterations offer no significance or positive contribution to the original architecture; therefore only the original building will be listed.

Following detailed reviews of 'Plan B' options, working together with Ysgol Gymraeg y Trallwng, it has been agreed that the most viable opportunity lies in building a new 21st Century school building towards the back of the listed building, whilst also restoring the main building. Specialist architects will now be appointed to the project to see how the authority can combine both elements and create a real 'wow factor' for the new school.
