Private Hire Vehicle Licences
Private hire vehicles must be licenced by the council and once they are licenced, they must be booked through a licenced private hire vehicle operator. The back of these vehicles display a yellow plate with black lettering.
From 1st April 2019 an age policy for licenced vehicles will apply:
Vehicles first presented for licencing must be less than 6 years old from the date of first registration (admission age)
Vehicles currently licenced must be less than 12 years old from the date of first registration provided each subsequent licence takes place immediately on expiry of the current licence. (i.e. no breaks in between renewal of the licence). This condition will affect existing vehicle licences when the licence comes for renewal after 31st March 2020 (12 months after implementation)
Once licenced, a private hire vehicle is always a private hire vehicle until the licence expires. Even if the vehicle is used for social and domestic use it may only be driven by a private hire vehicle driver licensed by the same council that licences the vehicle.
Before a vehicle is licenced it must pass an MOT test to ensure its safety. We ensure the vehicle is suitable and adequately insured. High standards of safety are expected and complaints are investigated.
We do not set fares and anyone hiring a private hire vehicle should agree the fare before starting a journey.
You will need to make an appointment to submit your application and vehicle documents (insurance etc.) also present the vehicle for licensing, please contact us.
If you have an accident in your licensed vehicle you must report it to the Licensing section using this form :
The licence conditions require you to report this to us within 72 hours. Please e mail the form to the licensing team email@example.com
