The new archive centre, based on Ddole Road, was completely refurbished last year to accommodate the council's archives and information management service after concerns were raised by National Archives and Welsh Government about the council's facilities.

"The creation of the new archive facility in Llandrindod Wells is a considerable achievement.  The successful adaptation and conversion of the Unit for archive purposes demonstrates the thought and care that has gone into its design and construction, said Jeff James, Chief Executive and Keeper of the National Archives.

"Whilst it is functional in appearance it provides for a good standard of preservation.  It has a pleasant environment for users and staff, and gives you an excellent foundation on which to develop the service for the benefit of the community.  The project team is to be congratulated on the successful outcome, and the commitment of Powys County Council to ensuring that its unique archival heritage is properly managed should be recognised".

Cabinet Member for Assets, Councillor Phyl Davies, said: "Powys County Council is extremely pleased to have received this recognition from the National Archives.  The main aim of the accommodation project was to ensure the council provided appropriate facilities for our historical records, and a search-room for researchers to be able to view them.

"Since opening the new facility visitor figures have significantly increased and new deposits of records have been deposited with the Archives, meaning the heritage and culture of the county of Powys is being safeguarded for future generations".
