Image of books in a libraryPowys County Council has announced a review of its library provision and is seeking support and funding ideas from Powys residents, communities, town and community councils, partner agencies, charities and local businesses in a bid to save £200k during the financial year ahead.

A number of daytime drop in sessions in early February have been announced by Portfolio Holder Councillor Rachel Powell for 10 of the smaller branches to allow residents to talk to her, find out more and put forward any savings or income generation ideas.

A feedback form and a short paper survey will also be available in branch and mobile libraries and on the council's website at www.powys.gov.uk/haveyoursay for 12 weeks from Monday 4 February until Sunday 28 April 2019.

Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Finance, Councillor Aled Davies said: "Powys initiated a similar review back in 2016 when its library budget was reduced by half. The unfortunate reality is that we are having to ask ourselves again if we can afford to keep our mobile library service and branch libraries running."

Councillor Rachel Powell, Portfolio Holder for Young People and Culture said: "Within the previous administration, the service worked with those communities, various partners and managed to co-locate several of the libraries. Local members and Town and Community Councils contributed significantly, as well as outside bodies and volunteers. Each library was unique in itself and successfully, libraries remained for residents, as well as providing efficiencies for the Council.

"Having had to review this area again, I am further hopeful for ideas and a solution-based approach in keeping branches and mobile libraries functioning - such as, population patrons, sponsorships, partnership working and possible income generation."
