National Urdd Eisteddfod to return to Powys
The Urdd's National Eisteddfod will return to Powys in 2022.
It was announced at a press conference during the National Urdd Eisteddfod in Cardiff Bay this week that the Urdd intend to hold the 2022 Eisteddfod in Machynlleth.
This will be the first time in over 30 years that the event has taken place in Montgomeryshire, the last time being in Newtown in 1988.
2022 will be a particularly special year for the Urdd as it marks 100 years since it was formed in 1922.
The town of Machynlleth was chosen due to its central location and rich Welsh heritage, which made it a "good choice" for the centenary celebration.
The announcement comes just one year on from the successful Brecon and Radnor National Urdd Eisteddfod, which took place on the Royal Welsh Showground in 2018.
Responding to the news, Cllr Myfanwy Alexander, Portfolio Holder for Education and Welsh Language, said: "We are delighted to welcome the Urdd back to Powys, to one of the strongholds of the Welsh Language.
"To celebrate the centenary of the movement which is so central to Wales in Owain Glyndwr's historic capital seems fitting.
"Powys County Council regards the Urdd as a key partner. We want to build on the success of the Urdd Eisteddfod in Llanelwedd and our considerable expertise as an events county to ensure this celebration of Welsh culture is a triumph."
