Calling green fingered volunteers
17 October 2019
A new public garden space has been created at y Gaer in Brecon designed by local award-winning garden designers Harry and David Rich, of BBC's 'Garden Rescue' fame.
The beautifully laid out groundworks and planting on Captain's Walk has established well over the summer months benefitting from the mix of rain and sunshine.
Cabinet Member for Culture, Councillor Rachel Powell said; "The development of the Captain's Walk area, adjacent to y Gaer, into attractive gardens has been supported with project funding from the Welsh Government and now that it is almost complete, it is possible to see how beautifully it sets off both the new and historic aspects of the cultural hub building.
"We are fortunate to have had the nationally renowned Rich Landscapes create such an imaginative planting scheme in the town centre and I hope people of all ages and abilities will enjoy and make use of the public space."
Harry said he was grateful to be given the opportunity to create a beautiful public outdoor park for the community and visitors to Brecon.
"Being able to design a natural landscaping scheme in the public realm, inspired by the local scenery for people to enjoy walking through, sitting and reading a book in or socialising over a cup of coffee has been a real delight. I am looking forward to working with local people to care for the planting and plan to regularly enjoy the space when my family and I visit y Gaer."
Members of the Brecknock Gardening Association recently visited the site for a sneak preview, meeting Harry and his parents Liz and Malcolm who have been helping out with the establishment of the scheme.
Association vice chair Pat Wilkie said: "We are delighted to have the opportunity to view the Captain's Walk Gardens as well as y Gaer. Once it is open it will prove to be a wonderful asset for the Brecon and district community as well as visitors to the area. As a resident I feel so proud of what is being provided."
