Who is committing to act?

  • The Paris Agreement signed by 194 Countries in 2016 aims to keep climate change "well below" 2 degrees and preferably to 1.5 degrees warming.
  • The UK government is aiming for net zero by 2050 and in December 2020 also pledged a 68% reduction within a decade.
  • The Committee on Climate Change's target for Wales was a 95% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, in 2019 the Welsh government has this as the target and has the ambition to be net zero by 2050. At the end of 2020, the Committee on Climate Change produced it's bi-annual report recommending the Wales target is increased to net zero.
  • Many in the private sector are aiming for net zero by 2040, through initiatives such as the climate pledge and mission possible.  
  • The Partnership Council for Wales, including the Welsh Government has committed to achieving a carbon neutral public sector by 2030.
  • Over thirty funders of the third sector have pledged to combat climate change.
  • Powys hosts a wide range of community groups acting on Climate Change. Examples include  Brecon, Builth Wells, Llandrindod, Llanidloes, Machynlleth, Montgomery Energy Group, Newtown, Presteigne.
  • Machynlleth Town Council was the first in Wales to declare a Climate Emergency
  • The Centre for Alternative Technology hosted one of the first masters courses in sustainability and the Zero Carbon Britain project. Even when the centre is closed you can check out the past webinars.
