River Special Areas of Conservation Background

Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) are internationally important protected sites. The Powys Local Planning Authority area contains large parts of the river Wye and river Usk SACs. Activities in the catchments of these rivers has resulted in increased levels of Phosphorus affecting the protected water courses.

What are the Implications for Planning Applications and Development?

Powys Local Planning Authority (LPA) has a duty to assess the impact of planning applications on a river Special Area for Conservation (SAC). Natural Resources Wales (NRW) has provided planning guidance, compliance reports and carried out a review of environmental permits for larger Waste Water Treatment Works.

Other Actions and Regulations

There are a variety of ongoing activities which relate to river Special Areas of Conservations and their catchments in an effort to restore the habitats and remove excess phosphorus from the environment. Other regulations and/or permits may be relevant for developers and applicants.
