A project aimed to improve maths confidence is underway across Powys libraries, the county council has said.

Powys Library Service is now offering Number Up, a project which aims to grow maths confidence in parents and carers, helping to improve their numeracy skills and ignite a passion for maths throughout the family.

Number Up will be offering a variety of learning opportunities for free, from bitesize maths courses to formal qualifications that can open doors to new job opportunities or further education. Courses can be accessed online or in person, with library users able to borrow an iPad or laptop to support their learning.

Families can also access the Number Up book collection, which help to make learning maths enjoyable for children of all ages, as well as board games, such as dominos and snakes and ladders, which will be laid out on tables across libraries in Powys just in time for the summer holidays, so families can have fun whilst boosting their everyday number confidence.

Cllr David Selby, Powys County Council's Cabinet Member for a More Prosperous Powys, said: "Numeracy skills are an essential part of everyday life, whether we are paying bills, measuring ingredients for cooking, or helping our children with their homework. However, lots of people can struggle with numbers and may feel embarrassed about asking for help.

"Number Up is a great programme, allowing people to build confidence and skills in a fun way, making home budgeting easier and, hopefully, helping parents and carers get ahead in their work.

"If you're interested, why not get in touch with your local library and find out more."

The Number Up scheme is funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and will run until December 2024.
