Delight at success of council sponsored Service Children Awards

The Powys winners
An awards ceremony, sponsored by the county council and celebrating the achievements of service children from across Wales, saw many successes for Powys.

The very first Service Children Awards Cymru 2023 took place at Brecon's Infantry Battle School on Saturday, October 28.

Cllr Matthew Dorrance, Powys County Council's Deputy Leader and Armed Forces Champion, said: "It was brilliant to see so many service children and their families having a wonderful time at the awards ceremony and being recognised for the work they do to highlight both the benefits and the challenges they face because of their armed forces connections.

"I'm so glad we were able to sponsor this year's Service Children Awards Cymru and that the Army in Wales was able to host them in Powys. I look forward to seeing them go from strength to strength in the future!"

The Powys winners were:

  • The Service Children Ambassador of the year - Sponsored by Powys County Council: Silver - Beth Symmons
  • Unsung Hero Award - Sponsored by General Dynamics: Gold - Shan Kenchington (headteacher of Mount Street Infant School), Silver - Delyth Marshman, Silver - Tara Rana
  • The Community Award Under 11 - Sponsored by Your North: Gold - Samridhi Gurung, Bronze - Arushi Rai
  • Contribution to Sport under 11 - Sponsored by Forces Fitness: Bronze - Freddie Scott
  • Gold AFFS Cymru Awards:Mount Street Infant School

The event was delivered by Veterans Awards CIC in partnership with SSCE Cymru, with support from the armed forces in Wales.
