Boost for 11 Powys food banks
27 November 2023
They have each received a share of a total of £30,199, which has been distributed by Powys County Council.
The grant funding is aimed at supporting foodbanks to buy additional supplies and to help them cover their running costs as winter approaches.
The food banks, supporting Powys residents, which have received funding are:
- Brecon
- Cwm Tawe (CATCH)
- Helping Our Homeless (Builth Wells)
- Knighton
- Llandrindod
- Llani Pantri
- Newtown (Salvation Army)
- Oswestry & Borders
- Rhayader
- Welshpool
- Ystradgynlais
Cllr Matthew Dorrance, Powys County Council's Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for a Fairer Powys, said: "I'm really pleased that we have been able to help our food banks, which are sadly facing a burgeoning demand, by distributing this grant.
"They do a sterling job of supporting some of the most vulnerable people in our communities and if you need their help, please reach out to them."
Tessa Bradley, project manager for Llandrindod Foodbank added: "With the increase in costs that everyone is struggling with, the amount of food donations to Llandrindod Foodbank has taken quite a dip over the past few months.
"The money received from the Direct Food Support Funding has enabled us to buy food to cover the gaps and still be able to give food to the increasing number of people being referred to us.
"Without this money we would have had to limit the amount of food in each parcel, reducing the variety as well as quantity. Thank you!"
Rob Field, project manager for Welshpool and District Foodbank said: "The Direct Food Support Funding was a lifeline for the foodbank. We had experienced a drop in food donations and a rise in referrals of around 20% so, the grant enabled us to increase our capacity to support vulnerable individuals and families in north Powys."
