Past Powys pupil achieves 'double win' at Urdd Eisteddfod

Following their success last year, a past Powys pupil has won another prestigious award at the Maldwyn Urdd Eisteddfod, the county council has said.

Last week, Tegwen Bruce-Deans from Llandrindod Wells was announced as the 'Prif Lenor' or best prose writer, at the Urdd Eisteddfod in Maldwyn, winning the beautiful Crown designed by Mari Eluned.

Tegwen was born in London into an English-speaking family, moving to Llandrindod when she was two years old. She is a past pupil of Ysgol Trefonnen and Builth Wells High School (now known as Ysgol Calon Cymru) and graduated in Welsh from Bangor University. She now works for BBC Radio Cymru.

After winning the Chair at the 2023 Urdd Eisteddfod in Carmarthenshire, this makes her the second person ever to accomplish the "double win".

Tegwen competed alongside 18 others who were tasked with composing a piece or pieces of prose over 2,500 words on the theme 'Terfynau' (limits / boundaries).

Emma Palmer, Chief Executive of Powys County Council, said: "Llongyfarchiadau to Tegwen for such a fantastic achievement. To come from an English-speaking family, and to win, not only once, but to get a double win and the second time this has ever happened, is amazing.

"The Crown is one of the most prestigious awards at the Urdd Eisteddfod, and it's great to have a past Powys pupil taking it home, especially with the county hosting. Da iawn!"
