Revamp of gardens and communal areas at Machynlleth housing complex

A council housing complex in Machynlleth has been given a new lease of life with a renovation project which has improved the facilities for residents.

The project at Trem Yr Allt, which has seen a variety of improvements made to enhance the gardens and outside of the properties, has been completed by Powys County Council. The works were carried out by SWG Construction on behalf of the council.

Central to the project was the replacement of two steel staircases and a steel balcony to access the upper floor of a block of six ground floor flats and six maisonettes, which was originally built in 1974.

The old standalone garages were demolished to make way for a new parking area, and a pergola was built to cover a new seating area.

A new bin store and laundry drying area has also been created, along with a resin footpath linking the seating area with the properties.

Cllr Matthew Dorrance, Powys County Council's Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for a Fairer Powys, said: "As part of our At Home in Powys - Housing Business Plan, we are investing more than £6.8m to improve the wellbeing of communities through improvements to council homes and estates.

"I'm delighted that these works have taken place and that Trem Yr Allt has benefited from our investment. I'd like to thank SWG Construction for carrying out these works on our behalf."

Jacqui Gough, director of SWG Group, said the project had made a big difference to the overall look and feel of the area.

She said: "Removing the old garages and creating a new parking area has really opened up the space, and the new seating area and resin pathway gives the whole complex a lovely contemporary look.

"We also created new raised flower beds and installed bird and bat boxes to encourage wildlife, while residents got involved by planting bulbs which are due to bloom in the spring.

"The steel staircases and balcony was quite a major job, and involved the creation of a temporary staircase to ensure residents could still access their properties while the work was carried out.

"We would like to thank Powys County Council for their support with this project, and hope the residents enjoy the much-improved communal area over the coming months and years to come."

Rather than destroying the old metal bannisters from the site, they are instead going to be recycled at Machynlleth Bowling Club.

SWG Group also gave a financial donation to the local school, Ysgol Bro Hyddgen in Machynlleth to contribute towards the repair of their wooden pergola, as part of the firm's commitment to helping the local community during construction projects.
