Winter Maintenance of Powys Roads

Following a period of wintery weather and with conditions forecast to remain cold for the next few days, work to grit the primary road network across the Powys across the county continues.

Depending on detailed forecast and data from temperature sensors, the decisions are made to plough and grit the roads of Powys as necessary, with crews making up to three scheduled runs a day and remaining on standby to retreat as required. The fleet of gritters cover over 1,400km each time they grit the county's primary routes.

In between gritting roads, our crews are busy treating footways within town centres, outside schools, care homes, medical centres, etc. We are also focusing on restocking our reserves of grit and replenishing salt bins across the county as quickly as possible.

"It has been a challenging few weeks with the weather fluctuating between flooding and icy conditions." Explains Cllr Jackie Charlton, Cabinet Member for a Greener Powys.

"Crews have been out at all hours and in all conditions to treat and clear the county's main roads as well as gritting paths in our town centres and outside vital amenities like schools and medical facilities.

"The forecast for the coming days remains icy, and we are planning to deploy staff from other services where possible to assist the highway crews with replenishing salt bins and heaps in the more rural areas of the county.

"Whilst weather conditions remain cold, please take care when outside and allow extra time for journeys and consider whether travelling by car or on foot is really necessary."
