Brecon debaters triumph at Oxford

A group of talented Year 9 pupils from Brecon High School have been congratulated by Powys County Council for their outstanding success at a prestigious national debating competition.

Finn Irwin, Rhydian Davies, Darcy Richards, and Eric Pearce triumphed at the Seren Oxford Debating Competition, winning the National Plate at the finals held at Jesus College, Oxford in March.

The competition, part of the Welsh Government's Seren Academy programme, brings together Year 9 learners from across Wales to compete in British Parliamentary-style debates. It aims to develop learners' confidence, critical thinking, and communication skills - essential tools for academic and personal success.

During their two-day visit to Oxford, the Brecon High School team explored the historic city and university, engaged in high-level debates, and impressed judges with their thoughtful arguments and teamwork. In the final round, they debated the motion: "This house believes that teaching Religious Education is no longer relevant in schools" - a challenging topic that they tackled with confidence and clarity to secure the win.

The Seren Academy supports Wales' most able learners from Years 8 to 13, offering a wide range of academic enrichment opportunities to help them reach their full potential and progress to leading universities.
