Why is safe management of linen important?
In care settings, linen (e.g. bedding, towels, resident clothing) can become contaminated with blood, urine, faeces or other bodily fluids. These may carry microorganisms such as bacteria and viruses that can spread infection.
Correct handling, segregation and laundering of linen is essential to reduce the risk of cross-contamination between soiled and clean items.
A dedicated laundry room with a clear dirty-to-clean workflow must be in place to ensure safe processing.
Standard Process - Used Linen and Resident Clothing
- Remove solids before bagging.
- Place items in a water-soluble (alginate) bag, then into a white cotton sack or white plastic bag.
- Heavily soiled items should be risk assessed and managed as infectious.
- In larger settings, residents' clothing may be bagged separately from bed linen.
- Always wear disposable gloves and apron when handling used linen.
- After handling, remove PPE and wash and dry hands thoroughly.
Enhanced Process - Infectious or Soiled Linen
- Place directly into a red alginate (water-soluble) bag, then into a plastic or polyester outer bag, clearly labelled infectious linen.
- Transport to the laundry immediately.
- Wash linen at:
- 65°C for at least 10 minutes, or
- 71°C for at least 3 minutes (UK Health & Safety Executive / NHS guidance).
- Wear disposable gloves and apron when handling infectious linen.
- After handling, remove PPE and wash and dry hands thoroughly.
Clean Linen
- Store off the floor in a clean, designated room or cupboard not used for other purposes.
- Keep doors closed to prevent contamination.
Staff Uniforms and Workwear
- Transport uniforms to work in a clean plastic bag.
- Change out of uniforms before leaving the setting; place in a bag to take home for washing.
- Wash separately from household laundry to prevent contamination.
