Brecon town centre improvements

Brecon is set to benefit from a major uplift this year, as plans for a refreshed and revitalised town centre move into the construction phase.

Following extensive engagement with the local community, plans for the redevelopment of Brecon Town Centre have now been finalised, with work anticipated to begin this March.

The improvements will create a more vibrant town centre, with a strong focus on enhancing the pedestrian experience, strengthening connections across the High Street, supporting biodiversity, and celebrating the town's unique character. The scheme covers the full length of High Street Superior, High Street Inferior and the Bulwark. The first phase of the scheme will run from the eastern end of St Mary's Church right through to the Bulwark.

Thanks to the strong and constructive level of community engagement, the designs have been shaped and refined to reflect what residents, businesses and visitors told us matters most to them. Community suggestions have directly influenced decisions such as the type of non‑slip surface materials to be used, the inclusion of play elements, and design features that support people who use wheelchairs, mobility scooters or who are less mobile.

Following conversations with businesses we have made modifications to the design to accommodate their requirements. Plans to potentially change the one-way direction of St Mary's Street are progressing, with the legal Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) process due to commence shortly. We will also be trialling an automatic bollard system at the top of the Struet to replace the manual bollards currently in use. This will provide more flexible access for businesses during closure periods, and further discussions with businesses will take place. In addition, we have had discussions with the Showman's Guild, who operate Brecon Fair, regarding the proposed layout.

This project, including the construction, is funded by Welsh Government.

This visual gives a fantastic early impression of how the new-look Brecon town centre will take shape. More detailed plans and drawings can be viewed at Y Gaer, Glamorgan Street, Brecon from Friday, February 20.

Planned road closure - St Mary's Street - April 20 to May 1

Please be advised that St Mary's Street will be closed from April 20 to May 1. The closure will apply to the section of road between the Duke of Wellington Monument and the junction of St Mary's Street and Wheat Street, to allow for resurfacing works as part of the new road layout. All shops will remain open, and pedestrian access will be maintained throughout.

Planned road closure - High Street works area - May 5 to 15

The High Street will be closed from Tuesday 5 May to Friday 15 May. During this period, there will be no vehicular through access within the works area on the Bulwark. Through traffic will be diverted via Tredegar Street and Lion Street. It is advised that larger vehicles wishing to access the town centre, plan accordingly. Appropriate signage will be allocated at The Struet/Market St (near Cotswold Outdoor) junction and at Ship Street, to advise of restrictions.

All shops and businesses will remain open, and pedestrian access will be maintainedthroughout. Safe pedestrian walkways and clearly marked crossing points will be in place at all times.

Access for deliveries

The contractor, SEER Construction will work closely with businesses to minimise any disruption, however access for larger vehicles may be more restricted at certain times.

SEER Construction will be visiting businesses in advance of the closure to discuss individual delivery requirements, including preferred days and times. Larger delivery vehicles will still be accommodated wherever possible, and every effort will be made to maintain access.

Bus stop re-location - May 5

Due to the town centre works in Brecon High Street, the bus stop at Bulwark will be relocated to the stop at the bottom of Free Street, near The Watton junction, from May 5.

This temporary location will remain in place until completion of the town centre works.
