Dog owners urged to keep dogs on leads during lambing season
2 March 2026
Each spring, farmers face increased risks to their livestock as ewes become particularly vulnerable during lambing. Even the friendliest and most well-behaved dogs can unintentionally cause stress, injury, or fatality to sheep if not kept under close control.
Emphasising the seriousness of the issue, Cllr Jackie Charlton, Cabinet Member for a Greener Powys, said: "Lambing season is a critical time for our farming communities. It is essential that dog owners keep their pets on leads around livestock.
"Even the most docile dog can frighten or injure sheep, causing distress, miscarriage, or worse. By acting responsibly, we can all help protect animals, support our farmers, and maintain the beautiful landscapes we are privileged to enjoy."
The council encourages everyone using public rights of way to follow the Countryside Code, respect farmland, and take simple steps to prevent livestock worrying - including keeping dogs on short leads, sticking to marked paths, and ensuring gates are closed behind them.
