Powys will play a key role in the 2027 Tour de France Grand Départ, with stage three of the men's race starting in Welshpool and finishing in Cardiff on Sunday 4 July.

In between it will pass through some of Wales's most scenic areas and over some of its most challenging climbs, including many in our own county.

After leaving Welshpool's main street, and passing the iconic Powis Castle and gardens, the peloton will travel up the Severn Valley to Newtown, before heading south to Llandrindod Wells, Builth Wells, Mynydd Epynt, Brecon and Bannau Brycheiniog.

The Tour's description for stage three reads: "Taking place entirely within Wales, this stage is not only gruelling but also has an explosive finale and will put the peloton's team leaders and more punchy performers to the test."

The UK leg begins in Edinburgh on Friday 2 July 2027, with an opening stage heading to Carlisle, before visiting Keswick, Liverpool, Welshpool and Cardiff.

The world's biggest annual sporting event then heads back to France via a rest day for the cyclists.

Christian Prudhomme, Director of the Tour de France said: "The UK has always welcomed the Tour with passion and pride, and the routes we are revealing today reflect the beauty and diversity of Britain's terrain. Bringing both Grand Départs here is a testament to the strength of our partnership with British Cycling and the enthusiasm of the UK."

Paul Bush, Managing Director of Grand Départ GB 2027 added:"The UK has hosted unforgettable Grand Départs before, but 2027 will be bigger than anything we've seen - with both the men's and women's pelotons starting here together for the historic very first time. This will be a 'moment for the nation' and is a once in a generation opportunity to inspire more people to experience the joy and freedom of cycling."

Powys County Council's Leader, Councillor Jake Berriman said: ""There is no greater honour in cycling than hosting the Tour de France's Grand Départ. Since it started leaving France in the 1950s the Tour de France has started abroad on 26 occasions, visiting Ireland, Italy, Germany and England along the way - but this is the first stage to be held in Wales."
