Learners thrive as Estyn recognises improving teaching at Ysgol Cefnllys

Learners at Ysgol Cefnllys are thriving in a calm, inclusive environment where improving teaching and strong relationships help them grow in confidence, independence and ambition, according to a new Estyn inspection - a report that has been welcomed by Powys County Council.

Inspectors found that pupils are at the heart of the school's work, with most feeling safe, supported and ready to learn.

Teaching across the school is effective, and recent professional learning has strengthened consistency and quality in classrooms. As a result, learners benefit from engaging lessons that develop strong literacy, numeracy and independent learning skills, while also supporting their wellbeing.

The report highlights the school's exceptional support for vulnerable learners, including care‑experienced pupils and those with additional learning needs. Inspectors praised staff for creating a nurturing and inclusive culture where pupils are understood as individuals and supported to make positive progress from their starting points.

Welcoming the findings, Dr Richard Jones, the council's Director of Education, said: "I would like to congratulate the staff, leadership team and governors at Ysgol Cefnllys on the work recognised in this report. Estyn highlights a school that truly understands its learners and is continuing to strengthen the quality of teaching they experience every day.

"Inspectors have noted how purposeful professional learning is improving consistency in the classroom, and that improvement is felt most clearly by the learners themselves.

"Our learners in Powys deserve teaching that helps them feel safe, confident and ambitious, and this report shows how the improving quality of teaching at Ysgol Cefnllys is helping young people enjoy the standards of education they deserve."

Estyn also identified attendance and exclusions, alongside the continued development of a broad and ambitious curriculum, as priorities for further improvement.

The council will continue to work closely with the school and its governors to support leaders and staff as they build on this positive progress, ensuring every learner benefits from rich learning experiences and high expectations for their future.
