Special schools and specialist centres

The additional learning needs of children will normally be met in mainstream schools or settings.

For a very few children it is necessary to provide more support that can be provided by a mainstream school and to support those with severe and complex needs there are a number of specialist centres attached to infant, junior, primary and secondary mainstream schools. In addition there are three special schools providing to those who need intensive specialist support.

Powys County Council has an ALN strategy - The Future of Special Educational Needs (SEN) / Additional Learning Needs (ALN) in Powys. As part of this strategy, for learners with ALN to be placed in a provision that meets their needs as near to home as practically possible, there are several already operational or due to be opened, satellite classes of special schools.

Ysgol Penmaes has a satellite class at Crossgates Primary School just outside Llandrindod Wells.

Bryllywarch Hall will have a satellite class located at Ysgol Maesydderwen in Ystradgynlais.

A further satellite class of a special school is planned in the future at Llanfyllin School.

Specialist Centres

Specialist Centres are an additional resource that allow pupils to gain specialised and specific support for their needs in order to help close and reduce any learning gap.

There are specialist centres across all phases of education.

Specialist Centres are sometimes referred to as:

  • Specialist Teaching Facility (STF)
  • ASD Centre
  • The "Unit" in.......
  • Pre-school Assessment Units (PSAU)
  • Assessment Centres
  • Specialist Units

Places in the Foundation Phase, Key Stage 2 - 4 Specialist Centres are in addition to, not instead of a mainstream school place.
