Special Educational Needs

To provision outside Powys

Transport is provided for pupils who attend special schools outside the county. Residential pupils at schools in neighbouring counties have transport provided on Monday mornings and Friday afternoons. Pupils at special schools in distant counties have transport provided between home and school at the beginning and end of terms and for half-term holidays.

Statemented pupils in mainstream schools

A Statement of Special Educational Needs does not entitle a pupil to school transport unless they go to a specialist centre hosted by the school and live further than the minimum distance from the centre. Otherwise, the pupil must meet the same criteria to qualify for home to school transport as pupils who do not have statements.

Safety Code

All pupils using school transport must obey the safety rules. These are listed on the application form. The Safety Code is attached to the application form and should be retained by the pupil.

You have a right of appeal if we decide not to award the provision of free school transport.

Bad Weather

In severe winter weather and in emergencies school transport may be cancelled and/or schools may close early. You should be aware of this, and if you decide to take your children to school in bad weather, you may need to bring them home.

Find out if a school is open or closed using our Schools Closures System.

Home to School and College Transport Policy 2025

The attached Home to School Transport policy has been approved for implementation starting in the academic year of September 2025. Upon its implementation, it will replace the current policy. Consequently, the current policy will no longer be published, and any new learners from 2025 onwards will be subject to the new policy. Existing learners who are already receiving school transport will continue to do so under the previous policy arrangements.
