Foster Wales Powys is looking for caring, flexible people who can provide a safe, calm home at very short notice for a child or young person.
Emergency foster care is short‑term care, usually needed when a child suddenly cannot stay where they were living. This could be because they are coming into foster care for the first time, or because another placement
Emergency carers give children a place to stay while longer‑term plans are made for them.
What does the role involve?
You would care for a child or young person for up to 28 days at a time
You would be available for up to 47 weeks each year
You are entitled to 5 weeks of paid rest time each year
At least one adult in the household must be available full‑time and not working elsewhere
You must be able to say yes quickly when a child needs an emergency placement
Emergency carers cannot:
Have children of their own under 16 living at home
Be caring for other foster children at the same time
You must be able to focus completely on the child placed with you.
Supporting the child
As an emergency carer, you will:
Provide a safe, consistent routine during a difficult time
Look after the child day‑to‑day, just like any caring adult would
Support them with education (including learning at home if they are not currently in school)
Help them attend appointments (such as health or education)
Support contact with their family where appropriate
Work closely with social workers, teachers, and other professionals
Help the child move on positively to their next placement
You will also write a short profile about how the child has been supported in your care. This helps professionals plan their next steps.
