People Handling Foundation
'People Handling Foundation' is a practical moving and handling course highlighting the safest methods for care staff to use when transferring service-users both with and without designated manual handling equipment. The course complies with the standard required by the 'All Wales Moving and Handling Passport' and is a mandatory requirement for all adult social care staff in both public and private sector employment. Updates are required annually to ensure all care staff are working safely for both their physical safety and the safety and comfort of their service-users.
Organisational Benefit
A safe and trained workforce, with ability to use appropriate Moving and Handling Equipment, single-handedly when this is required. As an Employer, we provide a duty of care to staff as per Health and Safety at Work Act and other relevant legislation.
Who Should Attend?
Those identified as requiring this training through Job Description or risk assessment. Staff providing physical work both 'hands-on' and using provided Moving and Handling Equipment for people of all ages and conditions.
Learning Objectives
Encouraging competence and confidence in using moving and handling equipment and safe, modern handing and transfer methods. Including 'Single-handed Care Practice' where practicable. 'People Handling Foundation' is taught in line with the 'All Wales Moving and Handling Passport' scheme. This training is a key method to ensure that handlers can choose the correct method of movement and safely use any equipment required to control the risk.
Course Content
'All Wales Moving and Handling Passport' scheme:
Module A - Manual Handling Theory
Module B - Inanimate Load Handling and Practical Application of Ergonomics
Module C - Sitting, Standing and Walking
Module D - Bed Mobility
Module E - Specific Handling Situations
Module F - Hoist Transfers
Other information
The Manual Handling Passport Health Questionnaire must be completed prior to the training. The moving and handling equipment used in the training room is Powys Occupational Therapy issue to adult service-users within the community. Emphasis is given to 'Single-handed Care Practice'. Refresher training is required annually.
