How is an IRO independent

An IRO is employed by Powys County Council, however, they are independent of our social worker teams and sit within our safeguarding and quality assurance service.

The law allows only certain people to become an independent reviewing officer (IRO)

  • IROs must be experienced social workers
  • They must be separate from the child's social worker and social worker's manager
  • They cannot be the child's personal advisor
