Carer's Needs Assessment

You have a right to a carer's assessment to get more support in your role supporting or looking after someone.

What is a carer's assessment?

A carer's assessment is a conversation which helps to works out what help you may need to support you in your role as an unpaid carer.

The assessment/conversation is a chance for you to discuss how your caring responsibilities affect you.

Any carer in Powys who appears to have needs for support can have an assessment by Powys County Council.

How it works

The assessment / conversation will cover:

  • your caring role
  • whether you're willing and able to carry on providing care
  • whether your caring responsibilities have an impact on your wellbeing
  • your feelings about caring.
  • your physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing
  • how caring affects your work, leisure, education, wider family, and relationships
  • what you would like to achieve in your day-to-day life
  • whether you need any support
  • whether you qualify for any help from the council

How to request a carer's assessment

We'll also look at whether you need information or training and consider the impact caring has on your work life and leisure as well as your health and wellbeing. Before the assessment, have a think about the sort of support that would help you.

You can ask for the assessment to be carried out confidentially, at a convenient time, without the person you care for being there. You can have someone else there to support you. You should discuss this with your Care Manager. Afterwards, you'll be given a copy of your assessment and advice on the services, information or support that could help you.
