Celebrate St David's Day

St David's Day Daffodils

1 March 2025

St David's Day Daffodils
Join the council to celebrate all things Welsh this St David's Day.

Did you know Powys County Council, along with all other Welsh councils, has a legal duty to ensure all residents can receive services in Welsh?

We embrace the Welsh language in everything we do, it's part of who we are. We work to promote the Welsh language, to make it easier to use, and treat it equally to English. We do this in the public services we deliver, the policies we make and in our internal work.

If you don't already, why not add a few Welsh phases into your day to celebrate St David's Day? Greet your friends, neighbours, and colleagues in Welsh. Here's a few phrases to get you started:

  • S'mae / Shwmae! - Hi! How's things?
  • Iawn - Fine
  • Bore da - Good morning
  • Prynhawn da - Good afternoon
  • Hwyl - Bye

Cllr Sandra Davies, Cabinet Member for Future Generations, said: "Welsh is a treasure we can all share. Why not embrace the language this St David's Day? Even the smallest bit of Welsh, like hello or goodbye, can go long way.

"Interested in learning Welsh or know someone that wants to? Why not start today. With courses through the National Centre for Learning Welsh and other organisations, there are many opportunities available to get you started."

You can find a course that is best for you here: https://learnwelsh.cymru/, or for a free online taster course:  https://learnwelsh.cymru/work-welsh/online-taster-courses-1/

We will be launching our new Welsh Language Promotion Strategy soon which sets out how we will promote Welsh and make it easier to use throughout Powys. So, keep an eye out here for more information: The Welsh Language. You can also find out more about how we use the Welsh language in our daily work.
