Supporting you to enjoy safe and enjoyable nights out

We play a huge role in helping you and your friends have a great festive night out. Here are some of the ways we support your evening.

Public transport: You might catch a council supported public bus.

Road maintenance: You'll travel on roads maintained by the council, which will have been gritted if it's cold.

Street lighting: Streetlights maintained by the council will help you see where you're going.

Food hygiene: Our environmental health team would have inspected the restaurant to ensure they meet food hygiene standards.

Licensing: Our licensing department would have granted the necessary licenses for serving drinks.

Trading standards: Trading standards will ensure your glass of wine is the correct measure.

Taxis: After your night out, you can take a Powys County Council licensed taxi home.

Supporting children during their school day

Have you ever considered the range of services we provide to support them during their school day? Here's just a few ways we support pupils like Emily.

School uniform: Emily receives a new school uniform funded by the School Essentials Grant ready to start the new term. This grant supports families from low incomes.

Schools: She arrives at one of the 91 Powys schools. 14 of which are brand new facilities offering Emily and her friends a great learning environment. Each day, over 15,000 children pass through the school gates in Powys per day, with an annual average cost of £5,864 per pupil.

Teaching staff: Emily is greeted by her teacher and ready to start the day. Emily's teacher is one of 1,020 across Powys.

Welsh Language: Emily is one of 2,760 pupils taught Welsh as a first language.

School meals: A nutritional school meal is served up for her lunch. This is just one of the 11,000 lunches we provide across Powys schools each day.

School transport: Emily is just one of over 5,500 children aged 4-16 who catches a free bus to and from school each day, with an average cost to us of £1,500 per pupil.

Hwb: The all-in-one learning platform: Emily arrives home and gets started on her homework. She has access to all her learning materials and homework online, and access to Microsoft Office apps like Word and PowerPoint

A glimpse into our workforce

Did you know? We have around 3,000 staff working to deliver the services we provide, as well as all our staff working in our schools throughout Powys.

Ten years ago, we had a total of 6,500 staff, but the financial pressures have meant we now deliver services with less people.

84% of our staff are Powys residents, working to care for our elderly neighbours, maintaining the roads, supporting people at risk of homelessness and much more.

Only 2.3% of our staff are in senior roles. We pride ourselves in supporting people starting out in their career, having welcomed 50 apprentices in the last four years. Many are still studying, but 28 of them are now permanent members of staff.

We offer excellent learning and development opportunities to our staff, supporting over 70 staff to complete their social work degree since the 'grow your own' scheme launched in 2020.

Our staff, many of which will be your family members, friends and neighbours work extremely hard, so please treat with them respect and appreciate the work they do for you and your community.

Enabling you to receive the language of choice

Did you know? We translate over 3 million words into Welsh each year! In the past year, 36 members of staff have started learning Welsh to ensure you receive services in the language of your choice.

Providing safe and suitable placements for children and young people

We are facing significant financial pressures. The cost of many of the things we pay for has increased by a lot more than the funding we get from Welsh Government. It costs £14.3m to provide safe and suitable placements for our most vulnerable children and young people. This is £1.8m more than it was a year ago.

Support people to remain living at home

Do you know the difference our Social Workers make to the lives of children, adults, and families in Powys?

Chloe, a Social Worker who works with people 65+ and their carers often during times of crisis to help improve their lives. Chloe adds, "It's so rewarding when we support people to remain living at home when they didn't feel like it would be possible to at first". As part of #NationalCareerWeek we highlighted the wide range of services we provide and the diverse careers that make it all happen every day. Our hardworking staff are dedicated to delivering services across various careers, including:

Providing around 8500 hours of home care

We are currently providing around 8,500 hours of home care across Powys each month, supporting 580 people in their own homes.

The demand for our services continues to grow each year.

This time last year, we were supporting 460 people with 6,419 hours of care - we are caring for an extra 120 more people with an increase of over 2,000 hours.

Transporting you from A to B, every day!

Every day we support you and your community to get to and from the shops, work, school, and college in an eco-friendly way by reducing traffic on our roads.

Did you know? We transport around 1 million passengers annually on our public buses and 5,500 learners daily.

Our Licensing team keeps you safe and ensures rules are followed

Our Licensing Team plays a big role in your daily life, often without you even noticing.

800+ Temporary Event Notices (TENs) issued annually for events such as village show and weddings.

300+ visits to pubs, clubs, community centres and cinemas for support and to check compliance.

400+ Licensed vehicles and 500+ licensed drivers from taxis, school transport and private hire to ensure they meet safety requirements.

Inspect 200 caravan sites and 20 mobile home sites to ensure they comply with standards and people have a safe and enjoyable stay.

Did you know our Licensing Team play an important role in ensuring local and major events in Powys take place safely?

Local events like village hall gatherings, school fairs, weddings, and village shows need licensing. Our Licensing Team issue over 800 TENs (Temporary Event Notice) every year to ensure these events are safe.

We also support major events like Green Man, Hay Festival, Royal Welsh Show and Mach Comedy Festival, ensuring they run smoothly.
Our team handles entertainment and alcohol sale licences, review event plans, collaborate with safety groups and carry out site inspections both pre-event and during events.

Here's how our Licensing Team supports your night out:

• Heading to your local pub for a drink? We ensure all pubs have the correct alcohol, and gaming machine licences so you can enjoy your evening safely and responsibly.
• Grabbing a late-night kebab - Craving a kebab after 11pm? We make sure all food providers have the required late-night refreshment licences to serve you hot food and drinks.
• Taking a taxi home? Ensure it's a licensed one! Taxis are inspected by us to make sure your ride home is safe and reliable.
• Make sure the driver displays a badge indicating they are licensed and uses a pay meter calibrated to Powys licensing fares to ensure you are charged fairly.
• We inspect over 500 licensed drivers.

• We also work with pubs to manage noise levels for nearby residents.

Low cost or FREE half-term fun

Check out your local library. You can enjoy Storytime and Rhymetime in many of our libraries across Powys. You can also borrow balance bikes for FREE to help your little ones learn to ride.
