Powys finalises day opportunities model for Llanidloes
28 November 2025
Following a cabinet decision in May 2025, a new Day Opportunities model will be implemented throughout Powys using a locality-based approach.
The new model is flexible, focussed on increasing independence, resilience and community connectedness. It will deliver a tiered approach to support based on individual needs, focusing on Preventative, Personalised and Specialist Support. This will enable an enriched level of opportunity tailored to the individual needs of residents.
Following additional engagement with the community for Llanidloes, the services currently held at Sylfaen and Maes Y Wennol will merge and become one service. The sensory and external opportunities provided within Sylfaen will be retained as a sensory suite within the wider Llanidloes Day Opportunities service.
By retaining part of the building at Sylfaen (the gardens, polytunnel, kitchen, bathroom, sensory areas) we will be able to provide an all-age model of support, designed to provide inclusive, person-centred services that span across all age groups and levels of need. There will be no change to the day centre at Maes Y Wennol, nor the days and times that it is open.
People who live independently are now having their needs met by their supported living provider in the community. This change began in October and initial reviews are positive.
With these changes in place there is a reduced requirement for space in Sylfaen. A local community group have expressed an interest in renting the remaining portion of the building and this is being considered.
"The move to a social model of care is an essential part of the changes I hope to move forward with adult social care. The changes in Llanidloes are an example of this, combining new opportunities for those who will benefit from them with protecting the provision for those with greater need." commented Cllr Pete Roberts, Cabinet Member for a Caring Powys
"Last month I heard directly from the community and addressing their concerns about the loss of the sensory provision have been at the centre of this decision to retain part of the building rather than transfer the equipment into rooms within Maes y Wennol."
