Supporting safer care through awareness, prevention, and shared learning

Health and social care settings face a range of safety risks that can change with the seasons, new guidance, or emerging national alerts. Staying informed helps staff recognise risks early, take preventative action, and maintain safe environments for residents, patients, staff, and visitors.

This bulletin brings together planned safety updates, seasonal reminders, and learning themes relevant to care homes, domiciliary care, and community services across Powys.

Safety topics may include:

• Infection prevention and control updates and outbreak preparedness
• Environmental risks such as legionella, water safety, ventilation, and temperature control
• Food safety considerations in care and community settings
• Equipment safety including hoists, beds, pressure relieving equipment, and alarms
• Seasonal risks such as heat, cold weather, slips, trips, and falls

Why these matter

Proactive awareness supports early intervention and helps prevent avoidable incidents. Sharing consistent safety messages strengthens good practice, supports regulatory compliance, and reinforces a culture of prevention rather than response.

Your role

• Stay aware of relevant safety messages and guidance
• Share key updates with colleagues during handovers or team meetings
• Follow local policies and escalate concerns promptly
• Use learning to reflect on and improve everyday practice

About safety alerts on ProtectNet

Information shared here is intended to support awareness, prevention, and learning across health and social care settings. Content is based on national guidance, seasonal risks, and anonymised learning. It does not relate to individual services, locations, or live incidents.

Tip: Short, regular reminders are more effective than one off messages. Consider building safety updates into routine team communication.
