Brecon Town Improvements Frequently Asked Questions

When will the work begin?

As part of the tender process, we have requested that the construction work should begin in March 2026. This is subject to the contractor's availability.

How long will it take?

This will depend upon the contractor's schedule of works, but it is anticipated to take 16 weeks for phase one.

Is it happening in one go, or in different phases?

The town centre scheme will be delivered in phases. Phase one will start at St Mary's Church and extend down to the Bulwark.

Who is the contractor?

We will update news on the appointed contractor once the procurement process has been completed.

Will I still be able to go into the town centre?

Pedestrian access will be maintained, and all businesses will be open as normal throughout the works, but there will be restrictions to vehicular access. We will be liaising directly with businesses about delivery and access arrangements.

Can I drive through Brecon while the work takes place?

There may be temporary road closures. Traffic management and diversion signs will be in place if required.

How will emergency vehicles get through, if needed?

Access for emergency vehicles will always be maintained.

Where can I park while the work takes place?

Only a small amount of on‑street parking will be affected during this phase of the construction works. To minimise disruption and support people visiting the town centre, some temporary free 1‑hour parking spaces will be available in George Street Car Park, adjacent to The CWTCH (former Tourist Information Centre), for the duration of the works. All other on‑street parking and local car parks outside the work area will remain unaffected.

Will blue badge holder parking bays be affected?

Some current disabled parking bays may be unavailable during the construction works. Alternative blue badge parking spaces are available in surrounding car parks and elsewhere in the town centre.

Will the barriers still operate at the Struet during the usual 12-4 pm closure?

An automated bollard system will be trialled as part of the scheme, aiming to provide more flexible access for local businesses and other users if appropriate.

Where can I see the final plans?

Up-to-date plans are available to view at Y Gaer, Glamorgan Street, Brecon.

Why is Brecon town centre being improved?

We aim to improve facilities for residents, businesses, and visitors. The plans focus on prioritising pedestrians, improving connections and biodiversity, and creating safe, accessible public spaces that enhance the town's unique character along High Street Superior, High Street Inferior, and the Bulwark.

Who is paying for this project?
