Sports coaching and volunteering - Young Ambassadors

Young Ambassadors (YA) was first introduced in Wales in 2009, and since then over 25,000 young people have progressed through our pathway in education and community settings. Young Ambassadors are utilised to facilitate activities, build belonging, and tackle inequalities, to ensure young people can gain equal access to opportunities to be healthier and more active.

The movement aims to:

  1. Develop young people to become the future leaders of Wales through sport, physical activity, and play
  2. Provide young people with positive opportunities and meaningful experiences to 'learn through leadership'
  3. Empower young people with a voice to influence the choices of opportunities to be healthier and more active.

Key Roles

The four roles we develop in Young Ambassadors are to inspire, influence, lead, and mentor, which they display and demonstrate by being a positive role model.

Young Ambassadors can play the role of activity leader, advocate, or activist and use sport as a vehicle to support young people who are inactive, disengaged, or disadvantaged.

Progression Pathway

The Young Ambassador pathway consists of four tiers (bronze, silver, gold, and platinum) which young people can progress through as they develop their leadership skills and experience.

To support their development, Young Ambassadors can access local or regional conferences, workbooks and webinars, as well as resources and newsletters, via their teacher or Sports Development Officer.

  • Bronze YA - We have over 200 bronze YA's throughout our primary and high schools, starting on their ambassador pathway our some of our bronze ambassadors run lunch time or after school activities for example basketball lunch session for different year groups every day focussing on one of our development sports in the county, they help with equipment and assist in PE lessons. They are also the voice of their peers ensuring everyone in their schools have the opportunity to be active.
  • Silver YA - Each high school have a group of 2-10 silver ambassadors, they are the voice and leaders of sport and activity in their schools. They mainly run focussed sessions during lunch, PE or after school for example running an inclusive insport club or running a lunchtime safe space club for year 7's. Our silver ya's are an asset to the workforce in our communities, ensuring all abilities have the chance to be active.
  • Gold YA's - With each high school having 1 or 2 Gold YA's, they are the leaders/mentors in the schools, helping with planning/organising events along with mentoring the other YA's in the schools the Gold's experience that leadership along with delivering groups for different targets.
  • Platinum YA's - Each year the youth sport trust select 1 per county to represent the area on the national panel, we over the last couple years have had 2 selected due to being such highly respected to the panel. They are a credit to the county and are a huge part of the movement ensuring all are able to enjoy a lifetime of happiness being active.
