Cabinet to consider Cradoc campus objection report
11 May 2026
Powys County Council is proposing to close the Cradoc campus of Ysgol Golwg Pen y Fan and earlier this year (March) published a statutory notice formally proposing the change.
During the statutory notice period, one objection was received.
On Tuesday, May 19, Cabinet will receive and consider the objection report and will be asked to approve the proposal to close the Cradoc campus with pupils transferring to the other campuses of Ysgol Golwg Pen Y Fan in Brecon.
The proposal, which aligns to the council's Strategy for Transforming Education in Powys, is driven by a range of educational and operational benefits.
Alongside this, plans for the school's new building are moving forward with real momentum with the council has appointed Willmott Dixon as principal contractor. The council will now be working with them on the design of the new building, which once built, will provide a vibrant, modern home for learning, growth, and opportunity for both pupils and staff.
Cllr James Gibson-Watt, Cabinet Member for a Learning Powys, said: "After carefully considering the objection, I will be recommending to Cabinet that they approve the proposal to close the Cradoc campus of Ysgol Golwg Pen Y Fan.
"We are committed to securing the best possible start for our learners and we believe that our Strategy for Transforming Education in Powys will achieve this.
"As part of the strategy, we need to address the high proportion of small schools in the county, decreasing pupil numbers and the high number of surplus places.
"Bringing staff and pupils together will support stronger collaboration, allow for more effective grouping by ability or need, and foster social development through larger peer groups. It also makes it more viable to run clubs, sports teams, and enrichment activities.
"This proposal has not been made lightly, but we believe it provides greater certainty ahead of the move to the new school building for Ysgol Golwg Pen y Fan."
