What we need from you
Before the marriage / civil partnership can take place, you must both complete notice with your local office.
When you give your notices of marriage / civil partnership both of you must produce the following documents at the appointment:
- Proof of name, date of birth and nationality
i) Valid passport (with Visa if applicable)
ii) Biometric Residence Card (if applicable)
iii) Evidence of EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS) status (if applicable)
iv) If either partner does not have a valid passport, they must provide a copy of their long birth certificate (with parent's names) as proof of identity / nationality. If either partner was born after January 1983,you must also provide a copy of your mother's birth certificate.
- Proof of address (one of the following for each party)
i) Utility bill dated within the 3 months of the appointment. (The bill must be for services received at the property such as gas, electric, water, etc)
ii) Bank / building society statement dated within 1 month of the appointment.
iii) Council tax bill for your home dated within 12 months of the appointment.
iv) Valid UK, EU, EEA or Swiss driving licence (registered to your current address).
v) Mortgage statement from the last 12 months.
vi) Current tenancy agreement.
vii) Alternatively, if either party is not a permanent resident in the district, they can bring a letter from the owner or proprietor of the address at which they are staying confirming the full address, who they are and the full name(s) of the notice giver. The letter must be signed and dated within one month of the date on which notice of marriage is given.
- Proof of condition (if applicable)
i) If divorced / dissolved - the decree absolute for marriage divorce or dissolution of civil partnership.
ii) If widowed - the death certificate for the former spouse / civil partner
- Proof of name change (if applicable)
E.g. Statutory declaration, deed poll or equivalent
All of these documents must be originals and cannot be photocopies.
If any of these documents are not in English, you will need to provide translations of them in addition to the original document.
PLEASE NOTE: If either you or your partner are not a UK national and/or are not a permanent resident within England or Wales, please contact the Powys Register Office as you may need further documentation to give notice.
