Arrange a citizenship ceremony

If you're over 18 and your application for British citizenship is successful, you must take part in a citizenship ceremony.

You can learn more about how to become a British citizen and read about the different fees for citizenship applications on the UK Border Authority website.

What happens at a Citizenship Ceremony?

The ceremony begins with a welcoming speech. Then you will take an oath of allegiance to the King and give a pledge of loyalty to the United Kingdom. Then you'll be given your citizenship certificates and will be a British citizen.

Before the day of the ceremony, we'll ask you if you would prefer to swear or affirm the oath of loyalty at the ceremony. If you have a religious faith, you can swear on a holy book, which you are welcome to bring for the event. If you prefer not to swear the oath, you can make an affirmation instead.

You will also need to bring your letter of invitation from the Home Office and a form of photo identification (either your current passport or the photo part of your driving licence). Without these documents, the ceremony will not be able to go ahead.

The ceremony will help you understand your rights and responsibilities as a British citizen and welcome you into the community.

In Powys, the ceremonies are held in our Registration Offices at Ystradgynlais, Brecon, Llandrindod Wells, Newtown and Welshpool. New citizens are welcome to invite family and friends to the ceremony.
