Intentionally Homeless

We may decide that you have made yourself Intentionally Homeless.

We will look at what caused you to become homeless and will consider the following:

  1. What did you do or fail to do?
  2. Did it lead to the loss of your accommodation?
  3. Was the accommodation available for your occupation, and would it have been reasonable for you to stay there?
  4. By doing or failing to do something which resulted in your becoming homeless, were you acting honestly and genuinely unaware your actions would result in your becoming homeless?

Intentionality can be applied to all households apart from those who have the following Priority Need:

  • 16 & 17-year-olds
  • a pregnant woman or a person with whom she resides or might reasonably be expected to reside
  • a person with whom a dependent child resides or might reasonably be expected to reside
  • a person who had not attained the age of 21 when the application for help was made or a person with whom such a person resides or might reasonably be expected to reside, or
  • a person who had attained the age of 21, but not the age of 25, when the application for help was made and who was looked after, accommodated or fostered at any time while under the age of 18, or a person with whom such a person resides or might reasonably be expected to reside

Note: intentionality may still apply if you have approached as homeless more than once in the last 5 years when the Council deem you have become homeless intentionally this time around.

If we decide that you have made yourself intentionally homeless, the length of time we work to assist you may be limited.
