Taxis and private hire licences - Operators
An operator's licence allows you to take bookings for private hire vehicles.
One person can be licensed and employ/sub-contract an unlimited number of licensed vehicles. A licensed private hire driver cannot take bookings unless they either are, or work for, a licensed private hire operator. An operator may pass a booking to another private hire vehicle operator who is licensed by the council.
A member of the public makes a contract with the operator who takes the booking, even if that operator doesn't provide the vehicle and/or the driver.
Before an operator's licence is granted, the applicant must satisfy us that the address from which they intend to operate is suitable and, where applicable, satisfy any conditions that we attach to the licence.
'For new driver applications please make an appointment with your nearest office to submit your forms, you will be required to bring with you a range of ID documents to enable DBS and DVLA checks to be made, officers will give you further details of the requirements when you make your appointment'
