DIY waste charges

From 1 April 2025, you will need to pay to take DIY waste to the Household Recycling Centres.
Waste from any DIY works or improvements on your home is classified as industrial (construction and demolition) waste, not household waste (waste created in the day to day running of your household). Household Recycling Centres are not obliged to accept industrial (construction and demolition) waste, or what we are referring to as DIY waste.
However, we understand that as a result of small home DIY improvements, residents can produce this type of waste, and we will therefore accept it at our Household Recycling Centres, with a small charge to cover the costs of handling and disposal.
The charges have not been introduced to make a profit and have been kept as low as possible.
We appreciate that charges are never welcome, but this will ensure we can continue to accept this type of waste and still afford to keep all five Household Recycling Centres open five-days a week.
You will need to pay by card at the Household Recycling Centres.
Please remember that you will need to book a time slot for your visit.
What items are considered as DIY waste and what will the charges be?
An easy way to understand what is classed as DIY waste is to think about which items or materials you would not take with you if you moved house. For example, kitchen units, bathroom suites, windows, doors, patios, soil, fence panels, etc - if you would not take it, then it is likely to be DIY waste.
We will only be making charges for certain types of DIY waste (listed below), in particular for materials which incur a cost to process for recycling. Even with the charges, the contractors and the council will not make an income from recycling these items.
Any DIY items not listed as incurring a charge (for example radiators, carpets, etc) will be accepted at the recycling centres free of charge.
