Priority Area 2: Communities and Place

Introduction 

Communities and place is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for residents by promoting social inclusion, health and wellbeing, and community cohesion. The Shared Prosperity Fund has facilitated projects that address inequalities, improve public services, and create vibrant, inclusive communities throughout Powys. 

The Communities and Place priority of the UK Shared Prosperity Fund aims to improve the quality of life for Powys residents by enhancing local infrastructure, fostering community pride, and promoting cultural and environmental wellbeing. 

Key initiatives include: 

  • Revitalising Town Centres: Supporting regeneration projects to create vibrant, accessible spaces. 
  • Enhancing Local Assets: Improving parks, cultural venues, and community facilities to boost engagement and wellbeing. 
  • Addressing Rural Challenges: Tackling issues like isolation, fuel poverty, and access to services in Powys' rural areas. 

This priority seeks to create connected, resilient, and thriving communities where residents feel proud to live, work, and enjoy life.

 Objectives 

  • Cultural Heritage: Projects that preserve and promote the rich cultural heritage of Powys, including support for local arts, cultural, heritage, and creative activities. For example, initiatives to restore historical landmarks and support local festivals that celebrate Powys' unique traditions. 
  • Rural Deprivation: Initiatives aimed at addressing the unique challenges faced by rural communities in Powys, such as improving access to services and reducing isolation. This includes projects to enhance local amenities, support community hubs, and provide better access to healthcare and education. 
  • Digital Connectivity: Efforts to enhance digital infrastructure and increase digital inclusion, ensuring that all residents of Powys have access to high-quality internet and digital services. This includes expanding broadband coverage in remote areas and providing digital skills training. 
  • Green Spaces: Creation and improvement of local green spaces to enhance community well-being and promote environmental sustainability. Projects include developing parks, community gardens, and nature reserves that provide recreational opportunities and support biodiversity. 
  • Active Travel: Development of active travel routes, such as cycleways and footpaths, to encourage healthier lifestyles and reduce carbon emissions. This includes creating safe and accessible pathways that connect communities and promote walking and cycling. 

Key Achievements 

  • 37 projects approved and delivered across Powys. 
  • 4 green or energy efficiency schemes funded. 
  • 300 community facilities and public spaces improved or developed, encouraging social interaction and support.

Caru Powys was a partnership between Keep Wales Tidy and Powys County Council, tackling litter, protecting wildlife, and making Powys cleaner and greener. Through clean-ups, behaviour change campaigns, and community action, it empowered people to take pride in their environment. 

Powys County Council - Community Hall Decarbonisation Improvement Scheme 

Powys took steps towards a greener future by improving energy efficiency in community halls across the county. The project worked with local communities to cut carbon emissions, lower costs, and enhance sustainability through upgrades to buildings, equipment, and energy use.
