Volunteer with Powys Youth Justice Service

Image of a group of young people sat around in a circle

Powys Youth Justice Services is seeking volunteers to support the young people in our service. We work with individuals aged 10-18 who are at risk of becoming involved in, or are already involved with, criminality. Volunteers are crucial to the work we undertake, and the benefits of volunteering can have a wide-reaching impact on both the young person and the local community.

Appropriate Adults

When a young person is arrested, they are taken into custody for an interview. The role of an Appropriate Adult is to safeguard the interests, rights, entitlements, and welfare of the young person, ensuring they are treated fairly. An Appropriate Adult does not provide legal advice.

Custody lengths can vary depending on the complexity of the offence.

Police Stations:

  • Welshpool
  • Brecon

Out of Court Disposals

Out of court disposals involve a multi-agency meeting, including:

  • Youth Justice Team Manager
  • Police officer from Dyfed Powys
  • Children's Services representative
  • Adferiad Drug Services
  • Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS)
  • Restorative Justice Co-ordinator
  • Case worker
  • The young person and their parent/carer

The case worker prepares a report for the panel, which is then discussed to determine a suitable outcome.

  • Panels are held online via Microsoft Teams
  • Thursdays at 3:00 PM (approx. 1 hour)

Referral Orders

Referral Orders are court-issued sentences. A panel meets to discuss the young person's intervention, the offence, and its impact on the community.

  • Panels are reviewed every 3 months to ensure progress
  • Each panel includes two volunteer chairs, the case worker, the young person, and their parent/carer
  • Meetings are face-to-face and can last up to an hour

Held at various locations across Powys

Community Reparation Volunteer

Support young people in attending and completing reparation placements. Volunteers supervise the young person during set activities arranged by the case worker.

  • Activities vary and take place across Powys
  • Duration depends on the activity

What You Can Expect

  • Full training and support from our Restorative Co-ordinator
  • Valuable experience in youth support
  • A chance to make a lasting impact on a young person's future

Disclosure and Barring Service

All volunteers are subject to an enhanced DBS check and interview.
Previous convictions do not necessarily exclude individuals from volunteering; each case is assessed individually.
