Porth Agored - First Year in Practice - Newly Qualified Social Workers
This qualification has been designed and developed by a partnership of 12 Welsh authorities, collectively called Porth Agored.
Powys County Council aims to ensure that Newly Qualified Social Workers employed by the Council consolidate and develop the social work skills and knowledge they have gained through the Degree in Social Work. In order to achieve this, a set of standards and a process have been developed. The document is called 'The support, management and development of newly qualified social workers (NQSWs) during their first year in practice'.
All newly qualified social workers joining Powys County Council have a development plan to support them in their first year. The plan will identify individual learning and support needs and how these will be addressed. It is the responsibility of the Team Manager to ensure the plan is constructed and implemented. Once the plan is completed and signed off by the Team Manager then the new social worker can continue onto the Consolidation Programme.
In their first year in practice all Newly Qualified Social Workers will need to work on developing their role as a qualified social worker, understanding what is expected of them as an employee and a professional, and how the organisation functions.
They will also need to develop an understanding of the community in which they are working. Taken together these learning areas will assist with their consolidation and the development of their social work.
